Introduction to Wax Carving for Jewellery Making
Description:
Wax carving is a traditional and versatile technique used in jewellery making to create intricate and detailed designs. In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of wax carving and create your own unique piece of jewellery.
You will start by learning the basics of wax carving, including how to use wax carving tools to create three-dimensional shapes and textures. You will then design and create your own ring. You will learn how to carve and refine the wax, and how to add details and texture to your design.
Once your wax carving is complete, your ring will get casted and for the second date of the workshop, you will learn about finishing and polishing techniques to bring out the beauty of your finished piece.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a greater understanding of wax carving and its applications in jewellery making. You will also have a finished piece of jewellery that you can wear or give as a personalized gift.
Prerequisites: No prior jewelry-making experience is necessary. This workshop is suitable for adults.
Equipment: All necessary tools and materials will be provided, including wax carving tools, wax, casting materials, and polishing materials. Participants are welcome to bring their own jewelry-making tools if they prefer.
Materials Fee: This fee will vary based on several factors: ring size, width and thickness of the ring(s) you design, and the material you choose. The heavier the ring is, the higher the material fee will be. As an estimate: for the purple wax models in the photo, participants should budget approximately $40 for 2 thinner rings OR 1 wider ring (when cast in sterling silver).
The final material cost of your ring(s) will be determined by the size/weight of your final wax(es); once you complete your wax(es) in the first session, we’ll check the weight and estimate the material cost with you.
Please note: Workshop participants must be 16 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have parental consent / a signed waiver.
